The most basic need of every human being is water. Two liters of water are suggested for daily intake. Yet, much of the world does not enjoy safe drinking water: According to the most recent UN estimates, 785 million people worldwide, and especially in developing countries, do not have access to safe water, while 3.4 million people die each year due to unsafe water.
Basic water safety is generally the responsibility of state or regional governments. Yet, in China as well as in developing countries, governments often do not have the resources to monitor the quality of water consumed by billions of citizens.
